The Level 4 Diploma in Dog Training and Instruction is  designed for those who either want to work as a Dog Training Instructor, or are already working as an Instructor and wish to gain a formal qualification that is accredited and recognised by Ofqual      

Description

This course is level 4 which is equivalent to the 1st year at university  so please see additional information  for Entry requirements 

There are 4 practical workshop days which are in Hertfordshire, you will gain invaluable skills, not only in training dogs, but also in coaching owners and handlers to confidently train their dogs in a group class setting.

The main objectives of this are for you to understand the evolution of the dog and how this relates to their behaviour and motivations during training.

understand the welfare needs of dogs, safe handling and management, and health concerns that may impact training.

Recognise and interpret a range of emotional states in dogs and the importance of the canine-human bond in training.

Understand how dogs learn, techniques for teaching dogs new skills and overcoming challenges during training.

Be able to apply understanding of training to delivery of impactful training sessions.
Be able to critique own skills and performance when delivering dog training instruction to clients.

Unit 413: Canine Ethology (2 credits)
Unit 414: Canine Health and Handling for Dog Training Instructors (3 credits)
Unit 415: Principles of Canine Behaviour and Communication (3 credits)
Unit 416: Canine Socialisation (1 credit)
Unit 417: Principles of Dog Training (4 credits)
Unit 418: Principles of Instruction for Dog Trainers (5 credits)
Unit 419: Practical Dog Training and Instruction (19 credits)

 

GLH (Guided Learning Hours): 74 hours

TQT (Total Qualification Time): 370 hours

16 hours face-to-face, in-person workshop is a requirement

Additional information

Entry Requirements

All Candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Be capable of working at Level 4 standard (equivalent to 1st year degree / Foundation Degree level)
previous study at Level 3 e.g., A-Level, T-Level or BTEC.( proof will be required )
• Due to the practical nature of this qualification, you must have access to dogs for the purposes of training for a minimum duration of 168 hours.

This may take the form of:
o Working or volunteering as a Dog Trainer/Instructor or,
o Work shadowing a qualified/experienced Dog Training Instructor or,
o Working or volunteering at a dog day care centre or,
o Working or volunteering at a dog rescue shelter or,
o Another suitable equivalent
• All work experience must be sourced and organised by yourself

Assessments

1.Written questions
2.Written assignments x 5
3.Case Study x 1 – detailing a dog trained by yourself
4. Videos x 3 – evidencing training of THREE core exercises using a minimum of TWO different dogs
5.Practical Video X 3
6.Critical Reflection on ONE video
7. Dog Training Diary x 8 entries documenting your experience of training a series of 8 core
exercises
8. Microteach – a 20-minute mini training session demonstrating your ability to lead a group
of dog owners/handlers in a session
9.Completion of 168 hours’ practical training – gained within a suitable environment in which dog training can take place and evidenced through a Practical Hours Log
